Visitor Visa

Every traveler, regardless of their place of origin, must have a valid passport (or an unabridged birth certificate in the case of children) in order to cross the Canadian border. As you cross borders or airport checkpoints, your passport must have an open page for immigration and passport control authorities to stamp.

Many countries are exempt from obtaining a Canada Visitor Visa and will just require an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), but those who are not exempt must visit the Canadian embassy in their place of residency in person. An embassy specialist performs a biometric screening, and the travel documents you must collect and present are examined for permission (generally over a 4-6 week waiting period however this depends on your nationality and where you are applying from).
